SCULPTUREWALK
WHY PUBLIC ART MATTERS
Shared experience. Public art is one of the few cultural experiences truly accessible to everyone. Enjoying it is free, without barrier or expectation. Whether you work downtown, drive through on a commute, or spend a Thursday evening on the Platz, Vermillion’s public art is part of your experience.
Belonging & connection. Art has a way of bringing people together. A sculpture invites people to pause in the same space and sparks conversation. Public arts encourages people to slow down, look closer, and connect with their surroundings and each other.
Vibrant downtown. Public art contributes to the energy and identity of a place. Art enhances the experience of being downtown, making it more dynamic, welcoming, and memorable. It’s the reason Vermillion was voted USA Today’s #1 Best Small Art Scene—twice! For visitors, art like murals and sculptures create a sense of discovery. For locals, it builds pride and familiarity. Over time, it becomes part of the fabric of the town.
Art is part of everyday life. Public art meets people where they are. It removes the idea that art is something separate or exclusive—inside buildings you have to pay to enter—and instead wraps it into daily routines. Sunday brunch downtown, a stop into a shop, or an evening stroll include natural encounters with creativity and moments for reflection.
As stewards of this public art program, VCA oversees the selection, installation, and funds for the sculptures, in conjunction with SculptureWalk Sioux Falls. The sculptures are leased on a two-year cycle, which keeps our downtown fresh and fun for residents and visitors
Our 2026–27 sculptures choices lean into whimsy. Look for bright colors, silly shapes, and unique materials as you stroll the north side of Main Street between Elm Street and the Platz.
We welcome SculptureWalk sponsors and annual donations. Your contribution is more than a donation: it’s a way to shape the atmosphere of Vermillion’s downtown life. Each artwork costs $2,500/year to lease. Those funds pay the artists for brightening our community—VCA receives no fee for its stewardship.
VCA became the organizational home for the Vermillion SculptureWalk in 2023. We’re grateful to work in partnership with the University of South Dakota’s SculptureWalk Committee, the City of Vermillion, and SculptureWalk Sioux Falls.
